How to read a Four Pillars chart

From the Day Master and Five Elements to Ten Gods, Hidden Stems, and NaYin, this guide explains the structural layers used in Sibyl reports. It clarifies terms and relationships without presenting editorial prose as calculation.

Each pillar pairs one Heavenly Stem with one Earthly Branch, producing the eight characters. The Day Pillar stem becomes the reference point for Ten Gods relationships.

01 · Framework

Read the structure before the interpretation

Sibyl first establishes the Four Pillars through its published time pipeline, then derives Hidden Stems, Ten Gods, Five Elements, and NaYin from the calculated stem-branch pairs. The content layer explains those existing results; it never changes, fills, or guesses them.

Four Pillars anatomy

Four time coordinates, four reading responsibilities

Every pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch, but each position has a different responsibility in the time pipeline and in traditional reading. Locate the position before interpreting the pair.

01

Year Pillar

Time coordinate
The year pair locates the birth inside the solar-year sequence. Sibyl changes it at the absolute Li Chun instant rather than at a user's local midnight or January 1.
Structural responsibility
It is the chart's broadest time coordinate and supplies one visible stem, one visible branch, their fixed Hidden Stems, Five Element labels, Ten Gods relation, and NaYin pair.
Traditional reading lens
Traditional readings often use this outer position to discuss inherited, early, social, or generational context. Sibyl presents that as a reading lens, not verified biography.
Reading question

What broad context surrounds the chart, and which other pillar confirms or complicates that first impression?

Do not conclude from one pillarDo not turn the Year Pillar, zodiac animal, or one inherited-context metaphor into a personality verdict, family history claim, or forecast.

02

Month Pillar

Time coordinate
The month pair follows the solar-term month sequence. Sibyl switches it at the relevant absolute solar-term instant, so the boundary is shared globally before local display conversion.
Structural responsibility
Its branch records the chart's seasonal position, while its stem and branch contribute their visible relationships and fixed reference fields. This layer names context; it is not a strength score.
Traditional reading lens
Traditional schools give the Month Pillar major contextual weight and may connect it with formative environment, roles, work structures, or the conditions in which the chart operates.
Reading question

Which seasonal and organisational conditions frame the other seven characters, without deciding their outcome by themselves?

Do not conclude from one pillarSeasonal context is necessary but not sufficient for a strength, structure, career, parent, or favourable-element conclusion; those require an explicit whole-chart method.

03

Day Pillar

Time coordinate
The day pair identifies the sexagenary day under Sibyl's published sect-2 midnight rollover convention and the normalized birth-time pipeline.
Structural responsibility
Its Heavenly Stem is the Day Master: the reference used to name visible Ten Gods relationships. Its Earthly Branch remains a separate structural position with fixed Hidden Stems.
Traditional reading lens
Traditional reading places the closest personal reference here and may examine how self-position, close relationship, embodiment, and immediate life context meet inside the pair.
Reading question

What changes when the Day Master reference and the Day Branch are read together instead of reducing the chart to a single stem?

Do not conclude from one pillarThe Day Pillar does not prove a personality type, relationship outcome, spouse description, or chart strength. Every claim must return to the complete chart and adopted method.

04

Hour Pillar

Time coordinate
The hour pair is derived from the versioned true-solar wall time and Zi-hour convention after civil time, timezone, DST, longitude, and equation-of-time handling are resolved.
Structural responsibility
It completes the fourth stem-branch pair and preserves the chart's most time-sensitive visible coordinate. A different valid occurrence during a DST overlap can therefore matter.
Traditional reading lens
Traditional readings may use this inner or later position for emerging aims, private work, projects, legacy, or later extensions of the chart, with terminology varying by school.
Reading question

Which long-range or less visible direction appears here, and what evidence elsewhere in the chart keeps that reading proportionate?

Do not conclude from one pillarThe Hour Pillar cannot guarantee children, legacy, hidden motives, or later-life events. An uncertain birth time or unresolved clock occurrence must remain an explicit limitation.

These position notes are reviewed traditional reading language. They never alter the Four Pillars or add strength, structure, favourable-element, or event calculations.

03 · Five Elements

Five Elements are relational language, not a simple count

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water describe traditional phases such as emergence, visibility, support, definition, and flow. An element being visible is not the same as that element being strong.

Wood · growth and direction

Wood is the traditional phase of emergence, extension, planning, and organised growth.

Where is development asking for direction rather than speed?

06 · Scope boundary

The current report's explicit boundary

The current structural report does not calculate Day Master strength, chart structure, or favourable/useful elements. These assessments require an explicit convention, deterministic module, independently verified reference cases, and independent review; presentation does not infer them.
